Life

“And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.”

Malachi 3:3

rowing Up in Christ.  I was once a crackhead. This modem adage is not true; “Once a crackhead, always a crackhead.” For me it does not hold true. I am free! The Lord has set this captive free. I once was lost but now I'm found! This is the story of my family's pain and suffering-the short story. This is but one story of the intervention of the Lord Jesus in the life of one He loves.  I am free indeed!

I can remember talking with the Lord Christ Jesus when I was five years old. I would sit next to the window in the den of the house in North Carolina. My sister and three brothers lived with my mother and father in that house. My father built that house with his father and other laborers before he was thirty.

The modest brick house was, at that time, when I was five years old, a place of refuge. By the time I became a teenager that house would become a hellhole, but that's the “Wardaddy” story. My father was diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenic and we endured a thirteen-year hell which ended when he committed suicide with a shotgun blast to his head. Now back to this story!

After church, I would spend hours on the wooden L-shaped built-in sofa that my father built right next to the window in the den. I would share with the Lord about what was going on in my life.  On one occasion, my grandfather, Papa, had given us silver dollar coins one Christmas. I can remember loving the Lord so much that I put the silver dollar in the church collection plate. I wanted to give Him what I had to give and something which I treasured.

Well guess what? When I got home from church, guess where I went? To the window in the den to sit and talk with the Lord. Now guess what was waiting for me there. My silver dollar coin!

My parents could have retrieved it from the ushers or deacons at church, and placed it in the window sill. They knew that I would go perch there and find it. But imagine a five-year-old discovering a splendid cherished silver coin, which he had given in earnest to the Lord because he loved God so much. To this day, I believe it was the Lord who placed that coin there that day.

But guess what? If it were my parents, the ushers, or the deacons who made that happen, it was God who moved them to place the coin there!  Hallelujah!

In my youth, church members used to call me a Bible scholar.  After I finished my homework on many weekdays and on the weekends, I would read the Bible in the living room next to the aquarium. Life goes on. I grew up, went to college, got married, became a father and ventured into the United States Army. Life was moving at a good clip.

ead in Sin.  At church services, I find myself often shedding tears—tears of joy. I was sharing with Reverend Ette of Nigeria one morning on the way to an International Pastors Church Conference how I cry tears of joy. I told him that many people may think that I am crying tears of guilt or shame relating to my past—but they are not, they are tears of happiness.  Tears of joy because the Lord has moved supernaturally in my life and in the lives of my family.

I was dead in my sins. I was dead in my relationship with my family.  I was dead in my relationship with my church.  I was dead in my relationship to my community. I had no relationship with God.  I was a mess. I was a messy mess! I have learned through the ministry of Pastor Bill Reily in the Overcomers Ministry at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, a great many truths, the least of which is: some people—many people—have addictive personalities.

If we are not addicted to drugs, we may be addicted to food, fast food, sodas, tobacco, ice cream, coffee, poor relationships, hurting relationships, television, work, sex, fast women, fast cars, pornography, fame, power, glory, or any combination of desires.  In my heart, the Lord has let me realize that people are designed to worship something.  People are designed to love something and people are designed to surrender to something. What are you worshipping? What and who are you loving? To what and to whom are you surrendering?

And I will go as far as to say that, we may be addicted to making poor decisions in our lives. If poor decisions haunt you, if the results of your past decisions curse you and your family today, then consider changing your behavior and your habits; breaking the generational curse of poor decisions. Believe it or not, the trick to doing that is to first change your mind.

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Romans 12:2

The trick to changing your mind is to change your heart. Have a change of heart. A change of heart will make a difference in your mind and make the difference in your life. It will give your mind a new and positive perspective.

Change your thoughts.  Change your thoughts by changing your heart. Change the desires of your heart to those of the desires of Jesus Christ. What would Jesus desire for you and your family in your situation? What would Jesus want to happen to everyone who is impacted by your situation? What would Jesus do if He were you right now concerning your pressing issues?

Focus on the positive. If there is any good thing, focus on that. Paul says:

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

Philippians 4:8

Focus on the positive and leave the negative behind. Leave the negative alone. Leave it with Christ Jesus who can and will handle it in the most effective way possible — God’s perfect way. Jesus Christ and members of God’s Holy Family or members of the devil’s evil family will meet you in any place whether it is a negative one or a positive one! Positive things will meet you in the positive places or the negative will meet you in the negative places.  Stay positive so you can be victorious whichever place you may find yourself.

Let me take it a step further—if we live positively or negatively, positive life things or negative life issues will be drawn to us. Change your thoughts, change your behavior, change your habits, and change how you evaluate the choices which are set before you. Change your decision-making process if it is not producing positive results.

My son Marcus at age 22 said, “Obedience and discipline equals good choice.” He makes a great point!  In the Overcomers Ministry there is a great saying which is important to remember: “Nothing changes, if nothing changes!” Remember that! Walk with that until things change! Until you make a change.

CHAPTER

No One Left Behind

Demons. Crack. Why.

(Democracy)

Life torn from souls itched into chunks

left into the jaws of merchants.

These vessels carried carnality, vomit, feces, lice,

and urine mixed like milkshakes without hesitation.

In search of blinded grasping, which personify

the vanity of avarice on islands as fruits watched.

Man-thiefs is upon what these words speak mentally…

Trades altered, both took warriors, queens, bards, emirs,

elders, and infants.

Determined outcomes never imagined,

while swallowing barrels of currency that didn’t exist...

Shredded the fabric of controlled abilities,

breathing fire inside the mammon of hypocrisies.

Comfortable living.    Selfish satisfaction.

Perception of peers.      Manipulative Wordings.

Importunity of Control.    Interior intricacies...

Our World.

My son Marcus wrote this poem. I told him that I loved his expression in this poem. He told me, “Dad when I first told you about this poem you weren’t feeling it. Maybe you didn’t get it at first.” I told him that wasn’t it at all. When I was captive to crack, that is all I could think about—CRACK!

If I wasn’t high on crack, then all I was thinking about was when I was going to get high on crack again. Either I was waiting for the dope man to call me to tell me that he was finished “cooking it up” or I was waiting for him to call me and tell me he had found someone who had some crack for sale when his normal supply was low. My focus was not on poetry.

If I was high at the time of our conversation, I was ready to get off the telephone and get high some more. I did not want the high to be wasted and I wanted to build on the high I already had. It is the weirdest thing with drugs; you just want to get higher and higher.

It is the weirdest thing about addiction; you just want to get higher and higher.  It is the weirdest thing about chocolate, you just want to get more and more. You can substitute your addiction in this phrase. It is the weirdest thing about _________, you just want to get more and more.  We just want to keep on masking the pain—more and more with drugs, poor relationships, shoes, chocolate, ice cream, work, play, any over-indulgence will do. My focus was not on the words or him.

So NO, I wasn’t “feeling” the poetry. I wasn’t “feeling” him either. I was just ‘feeling” the demon crack—all on my back, all in my mind, all over me: spirit, mind, emotions, and body. It was all encompassing–-a demon drug.

But Marcus, being the spiritual child of God that he is, never for a minute let me go. If it had been me dealing with me, I think I would have lost me. But Marcus has an ideology: no one is to be left behind. This is Biblical.

“For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.”

M

eeting Friends on satan's Ground. Marcus believes in meeting his friends where they are in their walk with Christ or not with Christ in hopes of strengthening their faith or their walk with the Lord or by helping to establish their faith or their walk with Christ Jesus.

“Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.”

1 Corinthians 15:33

Know this all you who walk in this posture: the posture of helping your friends who are either in bondage, non-believers or weak-kneed Christians. When you leave the club or mall or work or wherever you go to help them; know this. The enemies of God hear you as you try to help your friends. When you leave that particular location, they will probably follow you home. Be aware of this possibility and use the Black Blob Prayer (Chapter 20).

They will then wait until you are the most vulnerable to attack you: while you are asleep! When you go to help your friends, 1) be “prayed up”, and depending where you are going, 2) you may want to have fasted that day, 3) bind the enemies of God while you are there, and 4) upon leaving that place, ask the Lord to send Angels to defeat the enemies of God so they cannot follow you home!

This is important! This is spiritual warfare! Just do it! That night my son came home after 3 a.m. The Lord had awakened me earlier to tell me what I just told you and I anointed him at the front door.

One part of an effective recovery program is for the participant not to visit old neighborhoods, the old haunts.  Of course, we all should stay far away from the old habits which lead to destructive lifestyles. Stay away from the places which spelled trouble for you the first time around.  If you must go to those places take the Holy Angels with you, go with the power of a fast and go in the prayer mode.

E

nough Was Enough. So Marcus wasn’t about to leave me in my bondage. He was in constant daily prayer for a change in me, for my deliverance.

“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man (and woman, and child, and family) availeth much.”

James 5:16

Unknown to me, my son, Marcus and my wife were on the telephone at least once a week talking about the situation. Elizabeth had been activating her faith. She had been enduring hardship. She was longsuffering, holding on to the Promises of God. She was keeping it together, in spite of everything!

But she was giving up on me; she had all but thrown in the towel. My wife was praying for release. She was praying for my release from my chains, the children’s release from receiving a negative male image, and her release from not having a responsible husband. She was praying for her release out of this marriage.

Enough was enough—hadn’t she done all that a wife was supposed to do? Hadn’t she been bearing the weight of her husband being there, but not being there? She was telling Marcus, “But you don’t know what it is like!” He was telling her, “Hang in there! He is somewhere inside of there! We are praying, so something is going to happen. God is working this thing out!”

And she would come back with: “But he is killing himself. He is not the same person I married. Things have got to change! I can’t take it anymore!”  Now you must know they did not tell me any of this until later on—way later, after my deliverance.

Having almost given up, my wife called our pastor. She has since told me that she was calling him to get “released” out of the marriage. She had done all that she could see to do to help me, but she had to consider the impact on the children and on her.

I was not helping myself. For her, it was time to call it “quits.” Many of you would have already called the cops, called the sheriff, called my mama, kicked me out the house and would have just been going to the pastor to tell him what had happened. I know, I know.

She went to the pastor to get out of the marriage, but what did he do? It was just like God to do this. The pastor told her to tell me to go to a church program for addictions called Overcomers. And he told her to go too! She was flabbergasted. She went to get released from the marriage and she was told not only to continue in the marriage, but to take your husband in for treatment. Isn’t that just like God?

At this time in my bondage, I was ready for Overcomers. I was ready for anything that was going to get me out of my chains. My chains were heavy. They were cutting me to the bone. I had little flesh left.

O

vercomers Ministry. My wife and I were going to Overcomers at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit. It was okay. It wasn’t life changing nor was it rocket science. It is a loving environment where you share issues, which are common to the group. It was very insightful. One of the first things that I learned was “run for your life” because the enemies of God are not messing around. They want your freedom and your life—they had both of mine.

I was possessed by demons; of this I am sure. My choice was taken away from me. That is what they do, take away your choice, your ability to choose. I would go to the meeting high on crack. I would leave the meeting and go home only to get high.

I was pitiful. At first I just sat there, saying nothing, knowing what I was planning to do in my mind. Crack was the center focus of my mind. My heart was set on getting high. Then I began to speak up because they would say; “You won’t get anything out of this, if you don’t put anything in.” I wanted this monkey off of my back. Did I say monkey? I meant 500 pound gorilla!

I was the only one in the group saying, “I messed up this week. I smoked some crack.”  I was telling on my sickness, my disease, as they say in the group.  But I felt like everyone in the room was thinking, “Look at you, you have screwed up again. How could you? You know better. That is not how we do things around here.” But I was an active participant and I was working in the group and the group in me by coming back, week after week and talking about what I was feeling and my serious struggles.

I

Didn’t Sign Up for This. That's what my wife, Elizabeth told me after one Overcomers meeting. I was struggling to keep my head above water. I could go two days and maybe two days and a half before the craving for crack would manhandle me, bringing me to my knees—I do mean to my knees.  On my knees looking at every piece of lint as though it could have possibly be a piece of crack I dropped on the floor and didn’t know.  That would never have happened.

The craving was sending me to the crack house, crack apartment, crack motel, or any number of locations where crack was openly sold. She told me that she didn’t sign up to sit in a room and talk to strangers about issues, of which she should not be a part. It was my problem. I had her in this I situation in which she didn’t want or deserve to be a part. And I didn’t fault her for a minute.

She was in tears as she said, “Look what your actions have done to the children. Look what you are still doing to the children.” Tears streaming down her face in the church parking lot, “Look at what you are doing to yourself. You got me away from the children, here at this place, etc., etc.”

I knew she was making avenues to be out of the relationship. She was setting it up for us to be apart. I made simple, non-effective arguments. I say what I thought would ease the pain she was feeling at this time. She was all but through. I could tell. I believe divorce plans were forming in her mind. I had the sad face on all the way home that night, and I was truly sad and distraught. But I fired up the crack pipe as soon as they went to bed.

R

ebuking satan. At one point in my addiction, I had stopped smoking crack. I had stopped for two and a half months. That’s right, imagine that, two and a half months.

Every waking ten to twenty seconds, I was saying, “satan, I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.” That’s right every ten to twenty seconds or less, I was saying this, aloud or in my mind. That’s all I could do to stop the onslaught of the demonic oppressive desire.

I tired of saying that phrase. And as soon as I stopped saying it, the addiction returned. Or the behavior or habit returned or continued. I believe that the demon(s) associated with the addiction returned to find me clean and came back with more demons to make my condition worse than before.

“When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.”

                      Matthew 12:43-45

After my deliverance the Holy Spirit let me understand that we have been taught a way to rebuke satan, but there is a more effective way. Point one. We have been taught to say, “I rebuke you Satan in the name of Jesus.” The first thing which is wrong with this statement is that we are capitalizing the enemy’s name, thus psychologically giving him power and respect. Do not give satan any power. Give him an inch and he will take a yard.

If you are going to move and live like Jesus, then live and speak like He did, in all things not just the ones you feel comfortable with or the things you want to do. The second point is this. When Jesus said, “Get thee behind me satan,” or “Satan, I rebuke thee,” remember, satan was dealing with God’s number one man, Jesus, the Son of God. The Son of God was talking to the number one enemy of God.

The number one enemy of satan is God and the number two enemy of satan is Jesus, so satan would definitely go after Jesus. In our case, we often like to think that satan is after us. That is the furthest thing from the truth. This is why. When satan and his angels were defeated and thrown out of heaven, there were one third of the angels of heaven with him.

Point three. Listen closely.  It is said that there is at least one guardian Angel for each human. And there are nine choirs of Angels and the guardian Angels are not in those choirs of Angels. So if there are six billion people on earth, and I know there was not that number when satan and his band of angels were kicked out of heaven, but stay with me. There is a very large number of guardian Angels and even larger number of Angels in the other choirs.

But if the Bible says there are tens of thousands and thousands of thousands of Angels that is because the Greek numbers only counted to ten thousand. So ten thousand represented the top number times tens of thousands and thousands. You can only imagine how many Angels were in heaven before the fall and how many angels which fell with satan and how many demons are at satan’s command.

So when people are thinking that satan is giving them a hard time, they would be better served to think that the hard time is coming from a demon, a power, a principality, spiritual wickedness from a high place, a ruler of darkness, or some other member of satan’s evil family.

Point four. When Jesus taught us to pray, He taught us to say “deliver us from evil.” And that is the key. Deliver us from “evil.” Evil covers the entire family of satan. You can say, evil, enemies of God, enemies of Jesus, enemies of the cross, enemies of man, enemies of God’s Creation, any of these or words which cover the scope of evil.

So the Holy Spirit let me know that it is better to say, “I rebuke you evil.” or “Get thee behind me evil.” or “The Lord rebuke thee.” But better yet, I later received the “Black Blob Prayer” which is chapter twenty.

If a general (satan) of an army was out to get you and he had a horde of foot soldiers, why would he come after you personally? You would have to defeat the privates, the sergeants, the captains, the majors and everyone up the chain of command before he would waste his time with you, unless you were Jesus or understood that you are a brother or sister of Jesus and have His Power at your disposal and you also knew how to use this Power.

Know that you are going to be dealing with evil, demons, powers, principalities, spiritual wickedness in high places, rulers of darkness; so get ready.

(Ephesians 6:12)

So let’s recap:

1.      Do not give satan any power. Do not give him an inch.

2.      Live like Jesus; rebuke, bind, and fight against evil.

3.      The enemy of God, satan will send his other forces before he will come himself.  There are thousands.

4.      Jesus taught us to say, “Deliver us from evil,” not deliver us from satan. Use the “Black Blob Prayer.”

5.      Be prepared to fight against demons, powers, principalities, spiritual wickedness in high places, and rulers of darkness before satan will show up (unless you have the manifestation of the Power of Jesus).

iven Up.  My habit went to two thousand plus dollars in a month. For me that was way too much. Some may spend that in a week or two days, but for me, I was out of control. I needed help and Overcomers was just not doing it for me.

My underwear was not fitting any more. I was “skin and bones.” My belt was past the last hole. Everyday I would look in the mirror and say, “I am going to quit today, because this stuff is killing me.” It was killing me. That’s another thing I learned in Overcomers; “Your next hit may be your last hit.” You can have a heart attack and that would end it all.

Elizabeth would say to me, “Anthony, look at you. You are killing yourself with that stuff. You keep on and you are going to wind up dead. You’re on your way right now you know?” I would agree because I knew she was right. I had given up. I had just gotten tired of resisting the temptation. It was too difficult to resist. I was “through!” I was just “through!”

I would drive to the crack house or drug boys to purchase crack, praying to the Lord on the way to stop me. I would listen to gospel music on the way there and on the way back, hoping something would give me strength enough to resist the urges, the temptation, to fight the taste of crack on my tongue, between my teeth, in my nostrils.

I would pray and listen to gospel music and pray again; with sadness in my heart and failure in my loins, I would partake of the dreadful sin. Crack is a powerful, spiritual drug. It had me beat. I just surrendered. I made up in my mind that I was unable to resist this drug, this demon and that I was going to die behind the addiction.

So be it.

Never ever give up!  Never, never, never!  Because God said,

“I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”

Hebrews 13:5

CHAPTER

19

A Pastor Once Said

Some things to think about.

1. Act as though God is real! Believe! Believe! Believe!

2. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil,

and he will flee from you. (James 4:7)

3. God wants an intimate relationship with you!

4. God and satan can't dwell in the same place at the same

time. Good and evil can't dwell together!

5. God breaks us down to build us up.

6. You can't run away from what you have to go through!

     God will walk you through!

7. God is working behind the scenes!

Wait for your curtain call! Don't miss your entrance!

8. As far as you went down, that is how far God is going

to bring you up—and further—and higher.

9. In all things, focus on the positive.

10. People's disbelief in your progress is there to build up

       your confidence in your success.

11. Through your adversity, God is building you a house.

The more the adversity, the bigger your house.

The bigger the hole, the larger the basement.

        Big problems = big houses!

12. Shake that monkey off your back. Did I say monkey? I

mean the five hundred pound gorilla!

13. Don't walk according to the cares of this world!

14. Don't walk with demons!

15. The bigger the trouble, the bigger the reward.

16. Life is like a rubber band; it pulls you down only to

shoot you up. The lower down we go, the higher up

we will be when we land!

17. No matter how far you get pulled down,

satan can't keep you down; only you can.

18. No matter what you go through,

God is right there with you. He will never leave you!

19. God is refilling you! God stops the refilling process

when he sees Himself in you!

 20. Our challenges are our weaknesses going through

God's refining fire. They become our strengths.

        Hang in there!

21. God doesn't judge you. He loves you!

22. Jesus bore our sins on the cross; all our sins!

23. The bigger the pain, the bigger the gain.

24. Hold on to God's unchanging Hand.

25. Remember, Jesus did the work on the cross;

we just have to walk in the path of Jesus.

Follow His Commands and His Commandments!

26. Jesus paid the price on the cross!

27. When you think you are walking alone,

       Jesus is walking with you!

28. You can go through anything with Jesus!

29. Jesus will set you free! He will free your mind!

30. Run for your life! Your eternal salvation is at stake!

God will never fail you, so turn and fight!

31. God always blesses a mess! Not sin, but our messes.

32. Just hold on to God! In the midst of your trouble

God is right there! Just hold on!

33. Know what you know-accept what you know!

34. God's got something waiting for you on the other side

of your storm! More love and blessings!

35. In all things, seek God first! Pray God first!

36. Draw a line in the sand! The old habits stop here!

37. You are worth it! You are bought with a price-Jesus!

God will never leave you nor forsake you!

38. You can't go anywhere but up! From where you are

now, head upward! Make a turn around in your life!

       Make a plan! Act now!

39. God is doing a work in you right now!

40. God is the source of your strength!

41. You are blessed when you may not feel blessed!

42. Praise God for what you can't see Him doing!

43. God is the pillar of my strength and my salvation!

44. The battle is in the mind. Stop procrastinating!

45. If God hasn't done it yet, know that He can!

46. Watch and see what Jesus Christ will do!

47. Change right now! Get over it! Forgive yourself!

48. Pain and suffering are the beginning of your blessings!

God is working out a “thing” in you!

49. God is faithful in our times of trouble.

50. The Blood of Jesus holds the keys to our futures.

51. Strife, curses, challenges, circumstances, troubles,

       problems, ugliness are life’s opportunities

       coming your way! Take advantage!

52. Don't let the opinions of others control you!

Take control of your life! You can do it!

53. Ramp up! Get ready! Put the petal to the metal!

Make your change come! Push! Push! Push!

54. Accept Jesus in your life so you won’t be under the

       power of darkness. Jesus rules!

55. Do your all and God will do the rest!

56. God loves you! He loves you regardless of your

shortcomings or your mistakes! God loves you!

57. All things are possible with God! All things!

58. Don't waste your life! There are people who are

counting on you! Do the right thing!

59. You have a friend in Jesus-a true friend!

60. No weapon formed against you shall prosper!

61. There is no progress without risk-try Jesus!

He will work it out! Give Him a chance! Try it!

62. Count on Jesus in your time of need.

       He has heard your prayers.

63. Jesus is petitioning the Father on your behalf and

dispatching Angels to come to your rescue!

64. Believe the report of the Lord Jesus Christ!

65. Challenges and difficulties belong to everyone!

66. God is mindful of you and your sufferings!

67. God has the last say about everything!

68. Start right here and now! Leave the past behind you!

69. There is no failure until you give up!

70. Don't give up! Your miracle is within you!

71. Don't give out! Your miracle is just around the comer!

       Keep on walking, jogging, running!

72. Don't give in! Your miracle is at hand!

73. God can do and will do above and beyond

what you expect Him to do, and think He can do!

74. Rejoice! Love the Lord for what He is doing

in your life and in the lives of your family!

75. Obedience is prosperity!

76. Living is serving! In Christ Jesus we are complete!

LOVE

Love is something everyone needs,

If you don't have it,

Your heart will be as small as a seed.

Love is something caring in your heart,

Love is more than just drawing a heart,

It's having an open heart.

Very complex it will be,

And throw your life you will see.

Love is not all of your life,

But part of it.
